EAA Chapter 25

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 – Chapter Meeting – BBQ Grill and Pot Luck at 6:00 pm. Business Meeting at 7:00 pm. Speaker at 7:30 pm.

Dr. Elizabeth Weber, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic trauma and limb lengthening for disabled children at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare will discuss high reliability standards and their importance in making our flying safer. Libby served as a U.S. Air Force pilot and flight instructor and flew more than 50 combat missions during the Persian Gulf conflict. We are in for a real treat.

Saturday, April 20, 2013 – Young Eagle event. Contact Bill Brown, Young Eagles Coordinator, to volunteer to help with the Young Eagles. Ground crew are always needed. Bill will put you to work as a pilot’s assistant or as a teacher of aviation principles to kids.

Dale Johnson Induction into MN Aviation Hall of Fame – The banquet will be held at the Ramada Mall of America, 2300 American Blvd. in Bloomington, just north of the Mall of America. Social hour at 4:45 pm, banquet seating at 6:15 pm. Contact Pete Gavin 612-866-6676.

Paul D. Randall, Pipistrel USA will show us the Pipistrel line of aircraft. The Pipistrel Sinus and Virus were the world’s first Ultralight Certified composite two-seater motorgliders. Made from the same JAR 22 long life composite materials as used in certified gliders these aircraft are economical to buy and own and simple to fly and maintain. Over 350 are now flying the skies around the world. The clean design, low drag and superb construction make these designs some of the most economical aircraft ever made.

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 – BBQ Grill and Pot Luck at 6:00 pm. Business Meeting at 7:00 pm. Speaker at 7:30 pm. Ray Peterson will tell us about his experiences as a Flight Engineer on a B-17 during WW II.

Besides the Young Eagles on the 16th, some members attended the Log Cabin Ski Plane Fly-In in Mondovi, WI on the 17th. John Schmidt will be a station leader at St. Olaf’s Annual Fly-in event in Tostrud Athletic Center from 1 – 3 pm on the 23rd. He expects to teach about 40 kids.

Steve Schultz, one of the principals of ION Aircraft, based right here in the Twin Cities (at KANE) will give us a presentation on their amazing aircraft. Ion Aircraft is developing a line of light, two-seat (tandem) airplanes suitable for training, sightseeing, cross-country cruising, making your neighbors weep with jealousy, and generally having fun.

-The Ion 100 is a kit aircraft being designed from the ground up to be Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) compliant.
-The Ion 105 is a non-LSA variant of the 100, with better cruise performance. The 105 version is meant for the US Experimental category.

Both versions feature easily removable wings for trailer storage and two sets of interchangeable wings to meet differing performance requirements.

Following the kit versions, Ion will begin sales of the Ion 120, a fully finished factory-built version of the Ion 100 sold under the LSA rule. The Ion 120 will be a turn-key complete aircraft–just climb in and fly away.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 MN Aviation Day at the Capital – On Wednesday, January 30, 2013, the Minnesota aviation community will meet at the State Capitol to visit with their State Senators and Representatives to tell them how important aviation and their local airports are to them and to their local communities.

On Sunday, December 9, 2012 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm we will have our annual Chapter 25 Christmas Party. This year’s Party will be at Pat and Mary Hoyt’s home in Eagan. Come join your fellow chapter members and spouses for food, beverage, and fellowship. We moved the date of our November Chapter meeting from the usual 3rd Wednesday of the month to the 2nd Wednesday this month (11/14/2012) because the 3rd Wednesday of November is Thanksgiving Eve and members and their families will be busy with Thanksgiving preparations and perhaps travel. Please mark your calendars accordingly. Our meeting speaker will be Gary Stinar, who will discuss his MIA search and recovery trips to New Guinea.
